DISCLAIMER: Back in 2017, I re-made Anywhere City from Grand Theft Auto 2 as a potential HD GTA Universe setting, and this labor of love remains my proudest effort to this day. While I succeeded in my goal of fully re-imagining the retro-futuristic metropolis, I did a lot more than just breathe new life into it... I also got extremely ambitious and decided that not only would this new Anywhere City have its own state to go along with it, but that it would be the main setting of an even larger fictional universe I imagined as the "Criminal Wasteland" series. Basically, I imagined this as a video game series that would've been made in an alternate universe where only the 2D Grand Theft Auto games were ever made, and that the Criminal Wasteland series would be the spiritual successor to the Grand Theft Auto series. I envisioned a protagonist who would be a "gonzo detective" (Hunter S. Thompson/Spider Jerusalem meets Leslie Nielsen from The Naked Gun movies) who would work alongside both sides of the law trying to survive life in Anywhere City following the murder of his fiancé, embarking on an odyssey across the megalopolis and Anywhere City's state and eventually bringing the city's massive underworld to justice, and vainly named the character Dimitri Faustin (justified as I couldn't think of a better name for the character). In subsequent DLCs that would go along with the main game, the Criminal Wasteland series would also see the character journey to the cities of Hedonisia and New Rappaport and the state of Westania, all settings of which I developed between 2017-2018. In those other settings, the character would investigate and bring to justice the major criminals of those particular settings (i.e. SleazeCorp of Hedonisia, the five mafiosi families of New Rappaport). Here's my dilemma, looking back on this project I made over five years ago: I don't regret making Hedonisia, New Rappaport and Westania as I believe those settings find and will continue to find an audience for those wanting GTA-esque settings. Most importantly, just seeing GTA 2's setting be brought back to relevance was priority number one for the concept, and making it happen was the most I could have ever asked for as a fan of GTA 2, the other 2D GTAs and the GTA series as a whole. I'll die a happy man knowing I accomplished an HD vision of what is, in my opinion, the most convincing setting in the GTA series and which more than deserved another chance of seeing the light of day as it's highly unlikely Rockstar will ever return to Anywhere City again. I am forever grateful that I had an opportunity to bring this concept to the masses via this channel. That said, I will admit that I went too far and got carried away with building this fictional universe based off GTA 2. I should have just concentrated on Anywhere City instead versus making the concept all convoluted. Therefore, I personally no longer think of Hedonisia, New Rappaport, Westania and most of Anywhere City's state as canon nor do I consider the Dimitri Faustin character canon. If I were to do the Anywhere City concept again, I would just have Anywhere City with its nearest suburbs and some countryside for a more evenly balanced setting than what I originally imagined. I had even went as far as to consider doing Roleplay Journals wherein I would describe each character in the Criminal Wasteland series - I decided against this and honestly it's for the better. It's best to not try to be something you can't be, and making vivid character descriptions is not an area I have any expertise in nor the time and patience. I would gladly just settle for an HD remake of GTA 2 where you'd have the option to play the new Anywhere City from a top-down camera perspective (like in GTA 3, which left open that option for GTA players returning from GTAs 1, London and 2) and do the GTA 2 missions in a new map that keeps all the original elements of GTA 2 in mind while keeping it fresh. I know it's a pipe dream but then again crazier things have happened. And will happen.
